What about free speech Elton John?

It's reported that designers Dolce and Gabbana have upset Elton John.
Both designers (who are openly gay) are not keen on same sex marriage or IVF. [click]

This was apprently Elton's comments regarding the matter, on Instagram

“How dare you refer to my beautiful children as ‘synthetic’,” he writes. “And shame on you for wagging your judgemental little fingers at IVF - a miracle that has allowed legions of loving people, both straight and gay, to fulfil their dream of having children.”
: “Your archaic thinking is out of step with the times, just like your fashions. I shall never wear Dolce and Gabbana ever again. #BoycottDolceGabbana.”

  1. “The only family is the traditional one.” That I do find highly offensive, I have to say.

I have to say for 2 clothes designers they sure do dress badly themselves.

    1. Yes, that comment is thoughtless.. and quite inaccurate. I'm a bit surprised by thier comments, purely because I've rarely heard a gay couple say anything like that. But... I suspect they are not alone in thier view. Still...I wonder if they don't consider their union a family!.( I'm not sure they thought it through)
My interest is with regards to the free speech debate. It appears that we are in support of free speech until someone says something we ourselves find offensive. Until we ourselves are hurt.. then all bets are off. The rules seem to shift, I'm unclear of the common consensus.. if there is one. The best dressed out of that 4 is David!

  2. He's not inhibiting their free speech. He's just saying he won't give them any more of his consumer dollars. Boycotting is a legitimate response.

    1. Is he asking ( indirectly) that others boycott the brand too?
Hmmm I 'm not sure, he does appear to be subtly trying to inhibit thier free speech Debra. He's basically saying.. say something( or believe something) else, or I will no longer give you my business. Elton is an influential guy, so if others follow suit it could harm thier business/reputation somewhat.
I suspect they're rich enough not to care too much .
If they apologize will he purchase their goods again? ( That could determine if he's trying to control their free speech or not)

I don't agree with thier comments . There is either an element of bravery or stupidity in thier actions. They must have known it would cause offense.

    2. Non-violent protest against hateful and ignorant speech is a perfectly acceptable response. If Dolce and Gabbana believe in what they're saying, they should have the courage of their convictions in the face of any protest. That's precisely how free speech works.

  3. I agree, LL Cool Joe and Debra. I was personally offended by their comments about traditionally-conceived children being considered a lesser than. My sister had a difficult time conceiving. Had it not been for invitro-fertilization I would not have my nephew. And I love him more than I love myself. I guess I've been boycotting them since the beginning, as I've never liked anything from them that I saw.
I dont think Elton John is inhibiting their free speech. He was defending the right of their children to exist and how they came about. As a dad I would do the same.

    Great post by the way
