The Knighthood...next big thing

Thoughts become things?

I cancelled an appointment today just to have some ‘me’ time
Felt I needed to take stock of everything, read awhile – and just breathe awhile
Thought about the things I’d done well over the week, and the things I could have inevitable done better
Then I thought - who cares?
Yet I care! - About everything – and nothing in almost equal measure – is that odd?
Everything matters to me – yet nothing matters
I guess the trick is working out when to care – and for what - and when to let it go!
Yet do we really ever have the power make that decision - or is it out of our hands?
How much control do we have over our feelings and emotions?
Are they like taps you can turn on and off?

Maybe...

Maybe everything we want - we get – including joy and sorrow
It’s said that everything we see – we touch - began with a simple thought – and thoughts become things
So whatever we want, be it to feel or not to feel, to move ahead or remain static – can become our reality.

Yet if that is so – why then are there so many unhappy people in the world?
Many live another’s reality – a road not carved by them – but for them - by someone else, whether in the developing world or right here in the UK
How many of us actually do what we want to do? –
Can we ever be happy living the expectations of someone else
Conforming to the idea of conformity – instead of truly being free
Surrendering to oppression

There are times when the reality of another can bring much strength and beauty to our lives - can fuel our own motivations - refocus our aspirations and offer us hope

As such, I sourced two poems for you to enjoy
One you may know more than the other
But like songs poems can touch a special place in our hearts
Make us laugh – cry or simply reflect
Can get us fired up or help us to relax
So... I hope you enjoy these

I think us ladies can take a lot from the second poem – despite the final line
I view it as – mankind - humanity

Poem 1

Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,

The World Watches

A prayer for those caught in the cross fire
The innocents
Those who refuse to follow orders that conflict them
Knowing the punishment that awaits them

I had two nice surprises this week
Thing number one... The bus driver actually stopped at the top of my road.. waited for me to catch up - and (didn't drive off but..!!) let me on!
Thing number two... The most polite and helpful 'security check' guard at City Hall..lovely

Anyway..
It's Friday but my working week is not over yet - I said yesterday I was almost complete - and I am... but I must reach the finish line.....

At which point I'm sure I'll feel like doing this!...





But after a nice soak and brush up.. will aim to look like that!!..Yep like a Princess!

Wish you were here!!


Counting down to 6pm..
You'll be pleased to know I resisted the temptation to turn on the 'TV'
Stayed true to my word and I feel much better for it
I've made a dent anyway so I'm halfway through
It took me almost an hour to focus.. can you believe that?
Anyway..tomorrow is another day How was your day?
Funny - I've worked so hard I just wanna mess around and be quite silly now!!

Now..where did I put that remote??..

Stop Procrastinating!

Okay - my aim today is to stop procrastinating.
I've done pretty much all I need to complete this 'assignment - and presentation'

'Hold up'..what's this?..I'm shocked by what I've just witnessed on The 'Jeremy Kyle' Show
A very young woman said her 'boyfriend' beat her up - kicked her - strangled - her spat in her face - then headbutted her! Did I mention she's pregnant?? well...she is..6mths - so that's not all he's done!!
what the hellllllllllllllllll
I never watch this show - don't think I can watch it now!
I have a day off so it's on in the background..
Damn

Anyway - back to my aim for today...
Today my aim is to stop 'not' taking action and get it done..
Oh my gosh - the creep is on now!! the crowd are booing him....
Again.. Dawna - to the plan..

I was given sound advice that it helps to 'do the thing you don't want to do 1st..
whatever you're putting off - do 'that' first.. then you'd have the rest of the day to yourself...promise??..yay!!

So.. I'm going to hoover - then knuckle down to work..then later - have a wonderfully relaxing bubble bath and watch Comedy Central!!

You wont believe it!..the man said he if he didn't care about his woman would he have this??? - then proceeded to expose what looked like some 'kinda' home made tattoo of her name 'etched' on his left chest! At which point Kyle just screamed at the guy ' What's that?? - you think that makes you a Mahnnnn??...I tell you what men do - they don't beat WOMEN!!

(Heck..reckon every woman needs a 'Jeremy Kyle' in her life - he's very protective..cool - kinda feisty though - funny sometimes - is he always like this??

Okay.. they've all calmed down now.. 'Kyle's' offering sage advice.. couples advice..tapping in to the guys 'better nature'.. has hope for them...faith they can turn it around..

It's like theatre... I've seriously gotta turn this thing off!!

Power Corrupts?

Protesters in Egypt and more recently Libya have expressed a desire for freedom - democracy - fairness - equality...whist their leaders express a desire to remain in control! This reminded me of a well known quote - and I began to think of it's truths..

Lord Acton, expressed this opinion in a letter to Bishop Mandell Creighton in 1887:

"Power tends to corrupt, and absolute power corrupts absolutely... Great men are almost always bad men."

Here's a similar quote from another English politician - William Pitt, aka the Elder, aka The Earl of Chatham and British Prime Minister from 1766 to 1778, in a speech given to the UK House of Lords in 1770:

"Unlimited power is apt to corrupt the minds of those who possess it"

What do you think?... true?

I think... "Power - like money - takes on the personality of he or she who possesses it. Both can be used to harm or heal...to build - promote - or suppress!...corruption(In the context of power).. in many ways is just another manifestation of fear

Maybe - the saying should be
"Fear - tends to corrupt... and absolute fear corrupts absolutely.. therefore
Fear.. is best avoided at all costs!"

So why do seemingly good leaders turn 'bad' 'rogue'.. and do they really change? I suspect they never really changed at all..we just get a glimpse into a previously unseen aspect of who they are...
Fear of losing control? control of what - whom exactly?
Fear of reprisals?.. why..who did you harm?
Who knows..human nature never ceases to amaze..

But a nations Army - should never be used against it's own people..

On a rain soaked pavement

Now a host to colorful water rainbows, and the musicality of feet

I was asked this week - twice actually and I couldn't think at the time (it happens right!!) - but now - having given it due respect and thought - okay - I confess - right now - I am pretty happy! Why did I have to think about it?? - I guess it crept up on me - I didn't realise - then again maybe I did but didn't want to admit it.. who knows? - I'm 'kinda odd!!..may-b-e

The Obamas are coming!

Looking forward to the state visit!

The Welfare State..

So David Cameron today delivered a speech on the Welfare Reform Bill - aka the ‘dismantling of the Welfare State’ Bill - with his usual confidence and unfettered self belief.
Our P.M was quick to assert that the bill is “not an exercise in accounting” yet referred to it as "an economic necessity” Keen to stoke up the passions of the passionate people he also referred to it as a “moral necessity”...of...“changing our culture”
What culture?...Oh – of course - he means the Benefits Culture… the Welfare- State- Culture..
Since its conception the Welfare State has been the pride of Britain across the World. Hard to disagree with Beverages principles of - the eradication of want, disease, squalor, ignorance, and idleness, especially when you consider what life in Britain was like at that time.
So what’s changed?
Why now - does our 43yr old Prime Minister feel the need to further subjugate people to a life of banal poverty and squalor?
There’s nothing morally right, or morally necessary about imposing draconian punishment on those who are little able to fight back.
Speaking today Cameron said “ If you're unemployed and refuse to take either a reasonable job(define reasonable!) or do some work in your community in return for your unemployment benefit (Big Society?) you will lose your benefit for 3mths, do it again, you’ll lose it for 6mths, refuse a third time and you’ll lose your unemployment benefits for 3yrs”

Does Mr Cameron not know any unemployed people? You see I feel that if he did, he could not so comfortably impose such a rule. If he does – then I’m shocked… well...almost. I also find it unusual to hear such out of touch rhetoric from a man of his age... let’s face it he’s young...around my age actually – and our 'generation' is not supposed to be as ‘stiff necked’ as the generations before us!!.. Are we not meant to be the cool ones??.. what happened to ‘Cool Britannia’? - Oh sorry .. that was ‘Blair’s’ honeymoon… well - the honey moon is well and truly over now.. but still - I’m confused - how will these people live? - What will they eat - how will they wash - what will they wear - how will they pay their rent… with- no- money?
David Cameron talks about wanting to simplify the system - then goes on to say…
“You’re on Job Seekers Allowance and you have the chance to do a few hours work. - today after the first £5 you earn, you lose a pound of benefits for every extra pound you take home, but with the universal credit you would keep 35p of benefit for every extra pound you take home..”
Eh??
Apparently 1 in 4 adults of working age, (who the government suspect can work) are not working...and that is an issue, yes... but the real issue for me is - why? - If it’s through lack of education and skills ( which in my experience is often the case) then that’s what we need to invest in.. Not ‘cut’ – ‘invest’. The confidence of the unemployed will increase as a wonderful by product, and the country - as a benefactor – will benefit.

I do not believe in Idleness either... most people don't - but if the jobs that the 1in 4 currently have access to won’t pay them enough – the choices for them right now are – ‘take that job and not pay my rent ‘( risk homelessness) or 'take that job and not eat every day’ ( risk poor health ) or - don't take that job - and risk the wrath of David Cameron’s policies…hmmm

I don’t disagree with everything Cameron says - not at all –on some things he has a point - but on this one I get the feeling that Beverages principles of Income, Heath Education Housing and Employment are in serious danger… It makes me nervous.. I wonder - If Beverage were around today - what he would think – would he be nervous too?

Let's hope this Bill works - for all our sakes!

It doesn’t matter

Matters not what you weigh - or how tall - or short you are

Matters not if you have little money

What matters is that you understand what it means to love
That you don’t fear it
That you have felt the pain of disappointment
But you’re not hostage to it
That your intuition is aligned
And your Ego controlled

That you are a vessel for goodness

Now I'm off to get ready.. long day today..

Spring

Now it’s light at 7am
Too bright to stay in bed
For me to pull my duvet tight
I’m alert now – energised instead

With eagerness and trepidation
We wonder of the day
What it will bring what we’ll achieve
Yet we fight on come what may

The cost of living they say will rise
It’s been rising for many - for years
At the end of the month – check the bank balance
Then wipe away a tear

It's been a while since I've watched anything so that was a pleasant surprise I must say..

Now I've decided I want him to sing to me when I get married..

But who cares??
You see ..as the World implodes... you tend to focus more on things that really matter - and my happiness... is at the top of that list..

Chemistry - a Valentines Message...

As Valentine’s Day approaches I thought it would be nice to share a few thoughts of a romantic nature. Yesterday I stumbled across an article listing things that women are ‘supposed’ to find attractive in a man... It included things like money, power, build, intelligence, the colour red (yes red!) features - (apparently when seeking a husband we will look for a man with softer – more feminine features - which implies he may be of the more nurturing type). It also stated that individuals are often drawn to people whose appearance is similar to their own in some way, whether height – build - face – often without even realising it..

Yet - I was reminded by a friend that in truth – all lists aside - it really comes down to one thing… Chemistry.
Yes - Chemistry… that’s all it takes. It’s something you can’t fake. It’s either there – or it isn’t.
Chemistry is what you feel when your hands accidentally touch - or when your eyes meet. It’s when the 1st and last thing you think of - at the beginning and end of each day respectively – is them. It’s when you’re busy, tired, stressed, or under the weather, yet the thought of them makes you smile. It’s when you see their imperfections and little quirks - yet they bother you not – you find them endearing –and you love them all the more for it. It's when you never want to change them - you accept them - totally. It’s when the smallest offhand remark they make can upset you for days - but when you see them you forget you were ever upset – and all you can do is smile. It's when you can’t wait to see them again - so you count the days - hours - minutes… yet when that time comes – and you're together…you want to stop the clock!.

It’s when you can talk to them for days - or sit with them in silence... yet hear their every word. It’s when they’re the only person in a crowded room - and the light in the darkness. It’s when you’d be happy to share a plate with only one set of cutlery – yet equally - present them with a beautifully catered meal with enough glamour and splendor fit for a king or queen. It’s when your heart races on sight and you act like a teenager, despite being in your 30’s - 40s - 50s or more. It’s when all your preferences and preconceived ideas of who you thought you’d fall in love with go out the window - and you're rocked to your core – yet never ask – why?.
Chemistry is silent – aided possibly by pheromones – the intoxicating scent that attracts a mate compatible to your DNA. – It’s unique – to you.
Chemistry is beautiful, funny, smart, and rare.

It’s doesn’t happen often – it’s not meant to!..
Its desire – it’s motive is to jolt you – to surprise you when you thought all hope was lost. It can soften even the hardest heart and commit the un-committable..turn your world upside down – and cause you to rethink your plans.
Chemistry is cool - unfussy - unpretentious - and relaxed. It doesn’t try too hard – it doesn’t have to… it operates alone – a freelancer.
So don’t worry if you don’t have a mate on Valentine’s Day – as Love has no definitive timeline – it’s omnipresent.
So trust in the law of nature – and have faith – as Chemistry… will be well worth the wait!

2011, International Year for people of African Descent

Yes.. it's not only the year of the Rabbit

2011 - this year - is the International year for people of African Descent...some may argue... well that's all of us then!! well... yes... but none of your lip right now .. you know what I mean.. possibly.. those of us with.. shall we say.. a slightly darker hue, who face the most discrimination for no other reason.. other than..( I'm simplifying I know!!)Check the UN Website
Which means.. that this year... should be like one year long birthday party.. with nice treatment..presents and 'everyfink!'..hey..where's the fan fair??..where're my presents??'
I digress...anyway...

Chinese New Year 2011

Hey y'all..
I'm on a China tip today..

This year 3rd Feb saw the start of the Chinese New Year.
This is the year of the Rabbit( please correct me if I'm wrong)

Word has it that this year will be a placid year!!.. a congenial time where diplomacy , international relations and politics will be given a front seat again.
It's also been mentioned that law and order will be lax, rules an regulations not rigidly enforced and many of us will make money without too much labour and enjoy a leisurely lifestyle... ( Big Society?.. I'm not sure this is how Cameron sees it!) it's said we will act with discretion and make responsible concessions..

I read this somewhere when I was researching CNY...don't ask me why..

Sounds nice.. doesn't sound much like life in the UK after spending cuts but you never know..
maybe everyone will get so sick of fighting that well start to chill out.. live in tents.. smoke and get laid like in the 60's... but the 60's was also a time of great change.. activists and marches... hmmmmm

Anyway.. here's something that may amuse you...
Born in '68( that was a great year wasn't it...) my sign is... the Monkey! - I am... they say...a monkey girl... very intelligent and able to influence people..
elegant and beautiful with a love of stage lights... I can hear you laughing..
I laughed too... trust me.. there's much much more...

Attended a great seminar at Operation Black Vote.
Met a great bunch of leaders... all keen to do whatever they can to make a difference - to someone...

We were reminded of a quote by Martin Luther King Jr that really summed up the day for us.. so... I thought I'd share it!!

1. You set the end of your Sunday lunch to coincide with Songs of Praise, then follow the subtitles and sing along.

You know you're not when ... you throw away an item of clothing that has at least '5 more years of wear in it!' simply because you just didn't like it anymore!!

2. You know you are when... you see nothing wrong with doing a spot of gardening in the freezing winter without a jacket!!..

You know you're not when... you still insist on looking cute out there... and quite frankly...no sun... no show!!

The Kindness of Strangers

Strangers both excite and scare me in equal measure - yet like a lit flame both are strangely hypnotic - capable of holding your attention at times against your will..

There was a time when your closest friends were unknown to you - an unfamiliar face -unfamiliar voice - and an unfamiliar name. Unless a special chemistry was present at the first encounter chances are (had you never crossed paths again) they would have remained strangers never to stand in your shadow again. Time invested can transform strangers into acquaintances... yet then again there are people you see and possibly speak to everyday who remain strangers still.

The emphasis therefore could be placed on the quality of the time invested. How well you communicate - how honest and how trust worthy you are. Fact is - a simple act of kindness from a stranger can completely change the way you feel and view the world.

So why do they excite me?... well… much like a journey to new lands I’m eager to learn more - experience something new - increase my passion for life - understanding - and love. You never know what role a stranger could potentially play in your life - they could absolutely transform it - you begin to wonder of the great mystery that caused your paths to cross - you just don’t know – which leads me seamlessly onto why they scare me – you just don’t know!!. Strangers could also bring with them stress - upset - confusion - and an unyielding motivation for mischief - mayhem - ' mix up' and a Machiavellian, master class in misery.

Hmmmmm!!

So you look for little signs - small subtle signs that may indicate which way the pendulum swings. Then, when you feel a bit more secure – at some point you take the plunge and Trust ( yikes!!)
I enjoy simple things like someone holding open a door - or holding the lift - or an honest smile ( for no reason and minus the feisty eye rolling later on) and I get that often – more often than not actually – which is encouraging – as it definitely brings out the best in me. Yet - I loathe the feeling of disappointment in mankind to the point that I try ever so much not to look for it at all ( you may try the …avoid eye contact and they can’t let you down technique!!) but despite myself …despite all my best efforts… all my attempts - I still expect it... every time.
Yep - hold the door - hold the lift - offer your seat - you see where I’m going with this!!!
I wonder if it’s a predominantly female thing. Maybe as women we’re hard wired in that way I don’t’ know.
I don’t think people necessarily have to try to be kind – I think they should take steps not to be - unkind. Kindness - by default perhaps - will be the result. I don’t want to confuse being helpful with being kind as there’s a difference. Please note - you can be helpful and still be an ass!! …at the same time too!!
No - there is something exquisitely special about the kindness of strangers, and I can’t close my eyes to that no matter how hard I try.
